(1) The term is also used when something is only swollen on one side, giving the ventricose object a profile like a person with a beer-belly.(2) In B. flabellifer the stem is not ventricose and the leaves have fewer, less rigid leaflets, forming a deeply grooved surface.(3) In most cases, even slender specimens are generally shorter and more ventricose than typical fulica.
