(1) We made no observation for pistillate aments , because they were too small and thin to observe(2) The flowers, both male and female, are grouped in aments that appear before the leaves.(3) Some plants produce both male and female aments ; others produce male aments on one plant and female on another.(4) The female aments of green alder are covered by exterior bud scales, unlike speckled alder in which the aments are lacking the outer scales (naked buds).
